The IEEE networking standard for wireless communications is 802.11. The most common types of 802.11 wireless networks and connections include the following (Higher Mbps = faster connection, Lower Frequency = longer range):

IEEE Standard Stream Data Rate Frequency Year Developed
802.11a 54 Mbps 5GHz 1999
802.11b 11 Mbps 2.4GHz 1999
802.11g 54 Mbps 2.4GHz and 5 GHz 2003
802.11n 600 Mbps 2.4GHz 2009
802.11ac 1633 Mbps (433 Mbps per spatial stream) 5GHz 2013

Commercial routers have support for several IEEE standards (e.g. 802.11a/b/g, 802.11a/b/g/n, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac), since not all devices support the latest 802.11ac standard.

Local Area Network(LAN) and Wide Area Network(WAN) are the two standards that are most common networking standards.

LAN and WAN are not networking standards, rather types of networks
