It is unclear to me why Firedrake was created, and even more, why a major project like "Thetis" uses it over FEniCS.  Can anyone help?

Which projects are major projects like the "Thetis"?

I understand that Thetis is assumed to be an element of the set major projects like the "Thetis". I am asking what are the other major projects.

I don't have any other major project examples, I just saw the one, namely Thetis, and decided it was better to diffuse my criticism by assuming other major projects probably existed.

There are many unclear things, this is more a question of philosophy. We can all help each other.
OK I'll take it.  I think the only thing that really bugged me about it was the description of FEniCS vs Firedrake taken from

https://fenicsproject.org/pub/presentations/fenics14-paris/FEniCS14FlorianRathgeber.pdf

Specifically, at the beginning of the slides the differences are described as:

"The FEniCS Project is a collection of free software for automated, efficient solution of differential equations."

vs

"Firedrake is an automated system for the portable solution of partial differential equations using the finite element method (FEM)."

That's just a jargon. Not very descriptive...

Thetis probably uses Firedrake because tensor product elements and extruded meshes, features not yet existing in FEniCS, are useful in atmosphere/ocean which has directionally very distinct spatial scales. But I would check it by asking Thetis team.

I would also suggest to ask Firedrake creators to tell why they created Firedrake.
Yes, I was generally interested in opinions of Firedrake from FEniCS developers and users.
