On the data link layer, the unit of measurement would be frames. The network switch takes a steam of bits from the physical layer and then converts the raw bits into data frames. Frames are then passed onto the upper layers. It also performs the work of Error Detection and Correction. After the error correction process, it then transmits each frame separately to the next layer. Devices, such as switches, reside over the data link layer.
